A Proclamation of the Governor of the State of Utah Honoring the Opening and Renovation of the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 20 and 21, 1993.
WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Madeleine is an important architectural and historic treasure of the State of Utah; and
WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Madeleine in its infancy welcomed immigrants who came to the Salt Lake Valley in search of new beginnings and today maintains a commitment to people of all races and every socio-economic group; and
WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Madeleine stands as a testament to the faith and self sacrifice of thousands of women and men long forgotten in the history of Utah and the West; and
WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Madeleine, as one of the most visible religious buildings in Salt Lake City, has served as a haven for reflection and prayer for people of all faiths in moments of sadness and joy; and
WHEREAS, people of all religious backgrounds and the diverse citizenry of Utah cooperated in an unprecedented manner to restore the cathedral and contributed to its refurbishment; and
WHEREAS, the cathedral is recognized as the center of an intensive and effective ministry to the poor, the hungry, the needy and the elderly; and
WHEREAS, the cathedral is a thriving center of the arts, humanities and public education and is a valued participant in ecumenical and interreligious endeavors;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Michael O. Leavitt, Governor of the State of Utah, do hereby recognize and celebrate the rededication of the Cathedral of the Madeleine and with it the preservation of this magnificent structure.
